Mamba Week 2020: “Be Legendary”

As we head into Mamba Week 2020, I want to pay tribute to Kobe Bryant through the sneakers he wore. To show what it means to “Be Legendary” and how can we continue Kobe’s legacy going forward.

8/24/20: Mamba Week

Mamba Week 2020 Releases

It’s been 8 months since we lost Kobe. The coronavirus pandemic ripped through the population and sports were cancelled. 2020 has been a tough pill to swallow so far.  Now basketball is back and Kobe’s Lakers are the number 1 seed in the West with title aspirations.  Mamba Week 2020 is here and a whole new generation of hoopers will be able to own a piece of Kobe’s legacy.

In Orange County, they’ve dubbed August 24th as “Kobe Day” in honor of his two numbers (8/24). In a story written by the LA times, the reasoning is simple: “The most important thing is to try and inspire people so that they can be great in whatever they want to do.” It’s a symbolic gesture that is sure to stand the test of time with the love Kobe garnered throughout Southern California. Nike has also decided to re-release his sneakers starting on what would have been his 42nd birthday, 8/23/20. This statement from the company speaks to their reasoning: “Nike will continue to release Kobe Protro shoes, allowing the millions of fans he inspired around the world to keep Bryant’s legacy going…”  The release of those sneakers will kick off Mamba Week 2020. In this way, Kobe’s legacy and Mamba Mentality as a whole will live on forever.

Looking forward…

I see Kobe’s legacy aging like one of his muses: Bruce Lee.  After Lee died, his quotes and his philosophies gained a legendary quality.  We’ve already started seeing this with Kobe.  Through quotes and stories from players and coaches, his legacy will only grow stronger.  Most recently, Devin Booker won the bubble MVP by averaging 30.5 ppg and leading his Suns to an 8-0 record.  He played every game with a message written on his sneakers that Bryant left him during his retirement tour. It read “Be Legendary.”  Messages like that and being able to buy his sneakers during Mamba week 2020 will inspire the next generation of hoopers to do just that.  Whether you’re a Laker fan, a sneakerhead or just a basketball fan in general, we will never forget Kobe Bryant and the impact he had on the game and on life.  “Be Legendary.”

Well written. Became a Kobe fan after his retirement (hated him growing up cause he alway beat my team) due to his work ethic, mentality and the way he approached the game. His highlights are unbelievable. Still shocked he’s no longer with us.
